All About Mouthguards
Top NYC cosmetic dentist shares must-have info about mouthguard use and care
Calling all contact sports players and teeth grinders! This article is for you. Mouthguards were created to protect your teeth from harm while you play or sleep. If you’re involved in…
…or any other contact sports or “extreme sports,” the American Dental Association recommends the use of a properly fitted mouthguard.
“Do I really need a custom mouthguard?”
Short answer? Yep.
Cheap, store-bought mouthguards are intended to fit a wide variety of mouths, so they tend to be uncomfortable. They can rub on your gums during use and cause painful abrasions, and since they aren’t customized to your bite, they can cause jaw pain and discomfort, too.
Getting fitted for a customized mouthguard is fast and easy! Call our office to schedule an appointment and we’ll create a custom mold of your teeth to create a comfortable and long-lasting mouthguard.
They’re built to last indefinitely, but if you use it often, we recommend replacing it annually to avoid bacteria buildup. And of course, the main way to avoid bacteria issues with your mouthguard is to clean it thoroughly after each use. You can do this with warm water and antibacterial soap, a 30-minute soak in white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, or simply use a soft-bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste.
Don’t worry, teeth grinders! We’ve got your back, too.
